Traditional Engraving Materials for the Workshop
Wood has long been a popular material for engraved signs, plaques and presentation pieces. It’s easy to work with, but there’s something special about the way the natural grain looks. It turns a basic project into something that really stands out. Different woods will give different results. Oak, Walnut, Cherry and Maple each have their own colour, grain and hardness, allowing you to choose a timber that complements your finished design. If you’re working on bigger signs or need a solid backing, Oak Plywood and Oak Veneered MDF come in convenient sheet sizes. But when you want that classic look, nothing beats solid timber.
Our wood materials can be used for everything from straightforward engraved signs and plaque backing boards to more detailed pieces. Here are some examples of finished products we’ve made:

Important Information for Outdoor Use
Some of the images and videos shown may feature oiled wood. If you are producing an item for outdoor use, the timber should be suitably protected against the weather. We recommend:
- Using solid wood or man-made MDF at least 6mm thick
- Applying a minimum of three coats of suitable oil or wood preserver
- Allowing the timber and protective coating to dry fully between coats
Wood below 5mm thickness is recommended for indoor use only.
The suitability and service life of timber outdoors will depend on the species, thickness, construction, exposure and protective treatment used. For outdoor work, always select and prepare the material with the finished application in mind.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will the wood engrave cleanly with a standard V-bit or engraving cutter?
Yes, you can machine these materials with regular rotary engraving tools, but the best cutter really depends on what you’re working with and the finish you want. For fine lettering, a sharp cutter, with a small flattened tip and a light finishing pass can help produce cleaner edges and help with detail. Always run a quick test if you’re trying out a new timber or sheet material.
How deep should I engrave into wood?
There’s no single answer here. For lettering and decorative engraving, a relatively shallow cut is often sufficient, while deeper engraving may be best for signs or designs that need greater definition or are planning to infill with paint/wax etc. The depth should be matched to the material, cutter and size of the lettering rather than simply cutting as deeply as possible.
Why does the engraved surface sometimes look darker than the surrounding wood?
This is a normal characteristic of engraving natural timber. When cutting, it exposes fresh wood fibres and can leave some darkening or slight marking around the engraved area. The result can vary considerably between wood types and even between individual wood pieces because of differences in grain and moisture.
Can I engrave small lettering into Oak, Walnut and other hardwoods?
Yes, although very small lettering is tougher than larger text. The hardness and grain of the timber can affect the finished result, particularly with fine characters. For detailed work, use sharp carbide tooling and make sure the material is held/clamped securely and the cutter is correctly set up before starting the job.
What should I do if the timber moves while I'm engraving it?
Holding the work steady is key, especially with sheet material or wood that isn’t perfectly flat. Make sure the material is properly supported across its surface and held firmly enough to prevent movement without damaging it. For bigger sheets, supporting the material at several points can help prevent vibration and shifting while you work.
