Detailed information about Wood Sheets & Backing Boards from 908 Ltd

Our range of wood sheet and backing board materials includes MDF, oak plywood, oak-veneered MDF, and natural solid woods such as Oak, Walnut, Cherry and Maple. Our wood products can be used across a wide range of engraving and machining applications. The individual product properties tables on our website provide further information to help you select the right material for your particular requirements.

Wood for Laser and Rotary Engraving

Different engraving machines and applications can require different material characteristics. If you're looking specifically for wood materials for a particular machining method, check our specialist categories:

Wood for Laser Engraving – Materials selected for laser engraving applications, including suitable MDF, plywood and natural wood options.

Wood for Rotary Engraving – Wood materials suitable for traditional rotary engraving machines, including materials that can be machined using carbide cutters.

These specialist categories provide more detailed information relating to each machining method, while this page gives an overview of our complete wood engraving range.

Our Range of Wood Engraving Materials

  • MDF: Our MDF products provide a smooth and consistent surface for engraving, making them suitable for a wide variety of personalised and decorative projects. MDF can be used for signs, plaques, lettering, artwork, displays and other applications where a consistent manufactured board is required.
  • Oak Plywood: Oak plywood combines the natural appearance of oak with the construction and versatility of plywood. The attractive oak surface makes it a popular choice for engraved signs, plaques, decorative pieces and personalised products where the appearance of natural timber is important.
  • Double-Sided Oak Veneered MDF: Our double-sided Oak Veneered MDF features an oak veneer on both faces, providing an attractive natural wood appearance on either side of the board. This makes it particularly useful for projects where both surfaces may be visible, or where you want the appearance of real oak combined with the consistency of an MDF core.
  • Solid Oak: Solid Oak offers the natural character and distinctive grain associated with genuine hardwood. Every piece of natural timber has its own grain pattern and appearance, making solid Oak an excellent option when you want each engraved item to have an individual character.
  • Solid Walnut: Walnut provides a naturally darker appearance with a rich grain, making it well suited to premium-looking engraved products, plaques, awards and decorative pieces.
  • Solid Cherry: Cherry is a warm-toned hardwood with an attractive natural grain. Its appearance makes it suitable for personalised products, decorative engraving and a variety of woodworking projects.
  • Solid Maple: Maple provides a lighter-coloured natural wood option with a relatively subtle grain. Its clean appearance makes it a versatile choice for engraved signs, plaques, gifts, artwork and other personalised products.
  • A4 & A5 Oak Backing Boards: Our A4 and A5 Oak Backing Boards provide a convenient option for smaller engraving projects. They can be used as a sturdy and attractive base for personalised products, plaques, artwork and other engraved creations.

Choosing the Right Wood for Your Project

There isn't one type of wood that is right for every engraving project. When selecting a material, consider:

  • The appearance and natural grain you want
  • The finished size and thickness required
  • Whether the project is decorative or functional
  • Whether one or both sides of the material will be visible
  • The type of engraving or machining being carried out
  • Whether the finished item will be used indoors or outdoors
  • How the finished wood will be treated and maintained

Natural woods such as Oak, Walnut, Cherry and Maple each have their own grain, colour and characteristics. Manufactured materials such as MDF and veneered boards provide a more consistent surface and can be useful where repeatability is important. Always check the properties table on the individual product page before machining. This provides information to help you determine whether a particular material is suitable for your intended application and machine.

What Can You Make with Engraving Wood?

Our wood materials can be used for much more than simple engraving projects. They are suitable for a wide range of applications, including:

  • Signs and plaques – House signs, business signs, identification plaques and decorative signs
  • Trophies and awards – Engraved names, logos and achievement details
  • Artwork – Detailed designs, illustrations and decorative pieces
  • Displays – Branded displays, information boards and decorative panels
  • Craft projects – Personalised and creative woodworking projects
  • Memorial and commemorative items – Personalised plaques and keepsakes
  • Hobby projects – A versatile selection of materials for makers and engravers

Here are some examples of products we have created using our stocked wood products:

Solid Wood for Indoor and Outdoor Projects

Solid wood can be used for a variety of indoor and outdoor applications, but it is important to select an appropriate thickness and finish for outdoor use. The wood should also be appropriately treated with a suitable exterior oil or wood preserver. Where oil is used, we recommend applying at least three coats to provide appropriate protection and help the finished product withstand outdoor conditions. Solid wood of 6mm or greater thickness can be used outdoors when properly treated, although natural timber will still require appropriate care and maintenance.

As with all natural timber, outdoor performance will depend on the particular wood, its thickness, finish, exposure and ongoing maintenance.

Responsibly Sourced Timber

We take the sourcing of our timber seriously.

Our UK sawmill supplier requires its timber suppliers to hold recognised industry-approved environmental accreditation. The raw timber used within this range is sourced from FSC or PEFC certified suppliers, helping support responsible forestry and the sustainable management of timber resources. Our solid wood species are sourced from the following regions:

  • Oak – Europe (France)
  • Walnut – America
  • Maple – Canada
  •  Cherry – America

Wood Materials We Use Ourselves

We're not just supplying these materials — we also use wood from this range ourselves. We use our wood materials when manufacturing products for The Garden Label & Sign Company, giving us practical experience of working with different wood types and producing finished engraved products.

Visit The Garden Label & Sign Company to see examples of wooden products produced using materials from this range.

You can also see some of the products we've produced using our CO2 laser machine in our wood engraving video:

Some of the images shown in this product category and in the video, having been oiled. If you would like to use solid wood for outdoor use. We recommend the use of at least 6mm thickness. Also apply at least three coats of oil to ensure your solid wood products will last outdoors.

Some of the solid wood shown in our product photographs and videos has been oiled. This enhances the appearance of the timber while also providing protection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does all wood engrave in the same way?

No. Different woods and manufactured boards can produce different results because of differences in grain, density, construction and surface finish. This is particularly noticeable when working with natural hardwoods, where the grain can vary from one piece to another.

Why can two pieces of the same type of wood look different?

Natural timber is not completely uniform. Grain pattern, colour and other natural characteristics can vary between pieces, so an engraved product made from solid Oak, Walnut, Cherry or Maple may not look identical to another piece of the same species.

Should I choose solid wood or a manufactured board?

It depends on the finished product. Solid wood provides natural grain and character, while MDF and veneered materials offer a more consistent manufactured construction. Consider the appearance you want, the application and how the finished item will be used.

Does wood need to be finished after engraving?

Not necessarily. The required finish depends on the appearance and application of the finished product. For outdoor solid wood projects, however, appropriate treatment is important to help protect the timber from the elements.

Can I use the same wood for different engraving machines?

Some materials can be suitable for more than one machining method, while others may be better suited to a particular process. Always check the information on the individual product page before machining rather than assuming that a material is suitable for your particular machine. Alternatively, give us a call and our helpful team will assist with your query.

Why does the grain sometimes affect an engraved design?

Natural wood grain can vary in direction, density and colour. This can influence the appearance of an engraved design, particularly on solid hardwoods. It is one of the characteristics that gives natural timber its individual appearance.

Is natural wood suitable for detailed engraving?

Natural wood can be used for detailed engraving, but the result will depend on the species, grain, surface, and machining method. For particularly fine or repeatable work, a more consistent manufactured material may sometimes be preferable.

How should I store wood engraving materials?

Keep wood materials flat, dry and protected from excessive changes in temperature and humidity. This is particularly important with natural timber and sheet materials, as environmental changes can affect the material.
