Important Information for Outdoor Use
Some of the images and videos shown may feature oiled wood. If you are planning to use wood outdoors, the material and its treatment are particularly important.
For exterior applications, we recommend:
- Using solid wood or man-made laser-friendly MDF at least 6mm thick
- Applying a minimum of three coats of suitable oil or wood preserver
- Allowing the timber and protective treatment to fully dry between coats
Wood below 6mm thickness is recommended for indoor use only.
The service life of natural timber outdoors will depend on the wood species, thickness, construction, exposure and quality of the protective treatment. Always select the material most appropriate for the intended application.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do some types of wood engrave darker than others?
Different types of wood will give you different results when you engrave. It’s all about the wood species, the grain, how dense it is, and even the amount of natural oil in the timber. Some woods give you a naturally darker contrast, while others give a lighter, more subtle. Even two pieces of the same timber can produce slightly different results.
How can I reduce smoke marks around my engraved design?
Smoke and residue often show up around your engraving, especially with natural wood. To cut down on this, make sure you’ve got good air assist and that your extraction system is working correctly; using the right laser settings goes a long way, too. We recommend using masking tape (See our masking tapes) over the surfaces to help protect the surrounding wood, depending on what you’re working with.
Can I engrave photographs or detailed images onto these wood sheets?
Yes, you can use many of these woods for things like photographic engraving, logos, or detailed artwork. The final result depends a lot on the kind of wood, how the surface is finished, the grain, and the image settings you use. If you’re working with a photo or something with lots of fine shading, it’s best to test a small piece first.
Why does the grain sometimes affect the quality of my engraving?
Natural wood isn’t perfectly uniform. Its grain structure changes a lot, and different parts react differently to the laser. That’s why you might see changes in colour, contrast, or details across your laser engraved design. If you want a smoother, more even look, we would recommend Laser Friendly MDF or Oak Veneer MDF sheets.
Can I use these wood sheets for both laser engraving and cutting?
Most of the materials in this range will work for both laser engraving and cutting, but it depends on the type of machine you are using and how thick they are. Cutting speeds and powers can also vary, depending upon the material. So, take a look at the product info for each material and always double-check that it's suitable for your laser and your project before you start cutting.
