Detailed Information About Laser Engravable Acrylic Sheets from 908 Ltd

Our Acrylic sheets or Acrylic glass range includes Cast Acrylic, XT (Extruded) Acrylic, and Modified Acrylic and is manufactured from high-quality acrylic chemically known as Poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA). They provide clean and smooth results when using a laser machine to laser cut and laser engrave the material. Most of our acrylic sheets are of a solid colour throughout, providing a consistent appearance. The exception is our Perspex Duo and Glitter ranges, which feature a two-layer construction, and our Mirrored Extruded Acrylic, which, similar to our Reverse Laser Engraving Material, has a mirrored foil base and clear surface.

Available in a range of colours, thicknesses and finishes, including clear, coloured, mirrored, and glitter/sparkling. With most colours being UV stable* and suitable for indoor and outdoor applications. Acrylic sheets are suitable for a variety of creative and fabrication projects.

*The Mirrored Acrylic is not suitable for use outdoors

Material Specification Table:

Key Features:

  • Ideal for CO₂ Laser Cutting & Engraving: Produces detailed engraving and smooth cut, almost flame-polished edges with raster/vector settings.
  • Solid Colour Cast Acrylics: Provides a consistent finish across the sheet thickness. Although it should be noted that the thickness tolerance is +/- 10%.
  • Perspex Duo & Glitter Acrylic: The 2-ply construction allows for engraving through the surface layer to reveal a contrasting base layer (and vice versa)
  • Mirrored XT (Extruded) Acrylic: Ideal for a "reverse engraving" technique. By flipping the sheet over and engraving the back, you create a 3D effect when viewed from the front.
  • Modified Acrylic: Engraves cleanly with little clean-up required. A popular choice for signs, stencils, project prototypes/models and crafts.
  • Our stocked Acrylic range is available in thicknesses from 0.8 up to 5mm: All suitable for a wide range of laser cutting and engraving projects.
  • Wide Choice of Colours & Finishes: Including clear, solid colours, mirrored and glitter/sparkle.
  • UV Stable Options: Suitable for long-term outdoor applications. *Our Mirror (Extruded/ XT) Acrylic range is recommended for indoor use only.
  • Paint Fill & Backlit Compatible:  Engraved areas can be backlit or in-filled with suitable acrylic paint to improve contrast.
  • Lightweight & Durable: Offers excellent strength without the weight of glass.
  • Cut to Size Available: Order sheets to your required dimensions to reduce waste and save machining time.
  • Optional Backing: Add self-adhesive or magnetic backing to your Acrylic Laser Engraving sheets for simple and quick installation and placement.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between cast and extruded acrylic?

The manufacture differences are as follows:

Cast acrylic is made by pouring liquid into moulds, resulting in a harder and stronger surface, and has better chemical and scratch resistance. It is easier to machine and laser-cut. Be aware that cast acrylic has a thickness tolerance of +/- 10%

Extruded acrylic is made by pushed plastic through rollers, making it more cost-effective with tighter thickness tolerances. It is a softer material, prone to stress cracking if not processed correctly.

How would I use modelling acrylic?

Modelling acrylic sheets are a good alternative if you need a thinner black or white solid colour cast acrylic. It does not come with any protective film, so it is a good option for making prototype products or models. It is also commonly used for crafts such as stencil making. It cuts and engraves extremely well on a laser machine.

Should I remove the protective film before laser cutting?

No. Leave the protective film provided on the acrylic to protect the surface from smoke stains and potential burn marks. The film should be removed before you begin laser engraving.

Can I cut 3mm and 5mm acrylic on my laser machine?

Both 3mm and 5mm acrylic can generally be laser cut, with CO2 laser machines provided your machine has sufficient power and the correct cutting settings. Cutting speed and power can both affect the final edge quality.

How do I engrave mirrored extruded acrylic?

The material structure is made up of a clear surface layer and a thin mirrored foil-like layer on the base. Like Reverse Engraving Laminates, you engrave using the "reverse engraving" technique. By flipping the sheet over and engraving the back, remembering to reverse, mirror, or flip your artwork before you begin engraving. This creates a 3D effect viewed from the front clear layer.

Is acrylic suitable for outdoor use?

Cast acrylic is UV-stable and highly resistant to weather. It typically will not yellow or become brittle in the sun, making it ideal for skylights, exterior signs, and greenhouses. Our Mirror (Extruded/ XT) Acrylic range is not recommended for outdoor use.

How do I clean my laser-cut acrylic?

Clean with a soft, microfiber cloth and a mild detergent or Clean-up Spray; avoid harsh ammonia-based cleaners.
